It was on her first throw that she hurled the record-breaking 172-I ! mark. She also scratched three times and had throws of 164-0 and 164-11. Back at home in Gridley this week, Deniz will only enjoy a brief respite from her discus -- Frida'y she heads to Knoxville, Tennessee for the Junior Nationals Tuesday. If she finishes first or second, she will join the touring Pan American team, which has scheduled a swing through Canada to face teams from that country, West Germany and the Soviet Union. In the fall, the easy going Deniz will begome a collegian and is look- ing forward to the higher level of competition. At Arizona State, which is in Tempe, just outside of Phoenix, Deniz plans to major in physical education with an emphasis on weight train- ing. Deniz is not positive of her future plans after her stint at Arizona State, although she is seriously considering attending a police academy for a career in law enforcement. But for now, she plans to "take each year as it comes. No big plans, just get an education and throw." l)eniz has thrown better than the 172-11 three times in meets. At UC1.A last year she hit 175-10, but since it was an open meet and she was not competing in the high school class, it did not count as a prep mark. At Live Oak this year, she went past the 175 mark, but the meet was not sanctioned, so that too did not count. Just last month, she hit a best-ever 178-8 during the NSCIF sub- sections here in Gridley. But that mark also did not count toward the prep record because it was not a sanctioned meet.
